For the love of fans.

For this first assignment I have read three fanfics and I would like to say a fewthings about them.

The first I would like to discus today is entitled Not a burden by fanfiction.net user HoshisamaValmor (1) and as with the others is based on 2013's industry changing video game The Last of Us. Taking the theme of parenthood and family from the game and running with it this fic, while very short is exactly the length it needs to be, short and simple it is Joel's inner monologue about his new role as surrogate father to Ellie and his feelings towards her. One thing I think was a very good choice was relating Ellie back Joel's deceased biological daughter Sarah and how he feels that her and Ellie should have met and that he feels the same way towards both. This is hinted at in the game, but never really explored and I liked seeing it be touched on.

The second is entitled just Lose Our Minds Together by fanfiction.net user Mizz Blackshaw (2) and is so named after a line during the tragic ending of the game's DLC expansion Left Behind and chooses to expand upon it's admittedly bleak ending. Once again running with the themes from the game, this one carries the theme of abandonment, while Ellie is not intentionally left behind by Riley, Riley's death does have a profound affect on her, however in the game we never see Riley's death, only the affect it has on Ellie. But here it is show and is done so in a very traumatic way, showing not only Ellie's emotional state going in to the game, but also the world's callous and casual use of violence, the fireflies gunning down Riley like she had never even been a person prior to her infection.

Now on to Making Friends by Lumy12 this story is short and sweet taking place within the shown events of the game's narrative, and is over Ellie's feelings of loneliness which end up being essential to the game's story and as with all three has a very oppressive atmosphere, and all three know exactly where they go in Ellie's arc and how to have her act. This one deals with her fears and anxieties over leaving the quarantine zone and her underlying fears regarding Joel and Tess. Fear being another constant except for in the first story as by this point Ellie has gotten over her fear. I think I may adopt the theme of fear and following the game's narrative character arcs for my own work.
